Local artist Parker McDonald, Monticello, has been selected to design the public artwork to be installed at the Northstar Commuter Rail Big Lake Station.
McDonald was chosen by an art selection committee of the Northstar Corridor Development Authority (NCDA) after a nationwide call for artists that began last fall. Big Lake City Councilmember Chuck Heitz, an NCDA member who served on the art selection committee, said McDonald’s sculpture proposal depicting geese in flight caught his attention.
“His proposal stood out,” Heitz said. “I think people who use the commuter rail line and people who live in the area will be proud of how the station looks, thanks in part to the public artwork.”
McDonald will unveil the artwork design plans at the Big Lake City Council meeting on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 7 p.m., at Big Lake City Hall, 160 Lake St. North, Big Lake.
The artwork will be installed prior to service start-up later this year. Big Lake is the most northern station on the commuter rail line. The public artwork will be funded as a part of the requirements in the federal full funding grant agreement.
