Track Work Continues for Hiawatha LRT Connection

Track work in downtown Minneapolis continues this week as crews work in the intersection of 1st Avenue and 5th Street, and along 5th Street between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue. This work will extend the Hiawatha Light Rail Transit line from the Warehouse Station along 5th Street to the new ballpark station that is currently under construction.

Northstar Commuter Rail Secures Fridley Station Funding

Station is expected to be complete by the start of rail service in late 2009

The Northstar Commuter Rail Fridley Station is expected to be fully operational when Minnesota’s first commuter rail service begins in late 2009. Today, the Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB) granted $9.9 million for construction of the previously deferred station as part of its first round of transportation grants.

“This is great news for commuters who are anxious to ride the line in 2009,” said Dan Erhart, chair of the Northstar Corridor Development Authority (NCDA).

Station Shelter Painting Underway

Track work continues in downtown Minneapolis as crews finished the northwest quadrant of the 1st Avenue and 5th Street intersection this week. Crews will begin excavating the northeast quadrant of the 1st Avenue and 5th Street intersection on Monday, October 27. Details of the closure are included below.

Work Completed on New Elk River Lot

This week, crews finished work on the new park-and-ride lot at the Elk River station. Work will begin next week on the existing lot and the station platform. All Elk River commuter coach riders should park in the newly completed lot beginning Monday, October 20.

Call for Artists

Request for Qualifications for Public Art for the Ballpark Station and the Ballpark Area

Project Partners:
Northstar Commuter Rail
Minnesota Ballpark Authority
Hennepin County
City of Minneapolis

The Project Partners are pleased to invite artists to apply for two public art projects for the new Minnesota Twins ballpark (Target Field) area. One project is located on the 5th Street side of the ballpark with a proposed budget of $200,000. The second project is part of the ballpark rail station and has a proposed budget of $150,000. Two other public art projects in the ballpark area may be announced in early 2009. Artists or artist teams may apply.

Applications must be received by October 24, 4:00 p.m.

Shelter Work, Concrete Pours in Anoka

Construction activities continue to progress at the commuter rail stations in Big Lake, Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Minneapolis, the Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) in Big Lake and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) connection in Minneapolis. The schedule provided in this update is tentative, weather dependent and subject to change.

Locomotives Start Arriving; Station Shelters Go Up in Minneapolis

On Thursday, October 2, the first Northstar locomotive, Locomotive 501, arrived in Minnesota. Locomotive 501 will be housed in the Vehicle Maintenance Facility, along with the other locomotives and the coach and cab cars as they arrive over the next six months.

First Northstar Locomotive Arrives in Big Lake

The first of five Northstar Commuter Rail locomotives has arrived in the Twin Cities Metro Area. It pulled into the Northstar Vehicle Maintenance Facility Friday in Big Lake, where all Northstar locomotives will be stored until the beginning of commuter rail service in late 2009. On its way to the facility, the locomotive passed future Northstar station stops under construction at Downtown Minneapolis, Coon Rapids, Anoka, Elk River and Big Lake.
