In fall 2006, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) granted the Northstar Commuter Rail project approval to enter the final design phase of development. FTA approval for final design is a required step toward gaining the federal funding needed to complete the Northstar project.

The Northstar Corridor Rail Projects utility relocation work is entering its final phase in downtown Minneapolis along 5th Street North between 1st Avenue North and 6th Avenue North. This work is the first phase of the Northstar projects light-rail transit (LRT) connection, a 4-block extension of the Hiawatha line to meet with the Northstar line. As planned, a majority of all utility work will be completed by the end of 2006 with the remainder scheduled to be completed by March 1, 2007.
